Living in San Francisco, I spend most of my time in Tahoe. There are a ton of good resorts and snow conditions are good as well. I prefer the North Shore because there are too many stuck-up skier morons in places like Heavenly. Kirkwood is cool, though. I spent one Winter in Utah and went back for a long weekend. There are some good resorts there as well, even though the 'Best Snow on Earth' slogan is full of crap. I guess the snow seems good considering that there is nothing else going on in the whole state...

Here are the resorts where I hang out the most:

Resort Scoop Favorite Runs
Squaw Valley All-time favorite since the Olympics in the 60's. Wide open bowl with many places to go. Biggest downside: strong winds on the ridge, up to 100 mph! Red Dog (always open)
Granite Chief (Powder conditions)
Alpine Meadows Alpine did not allow boarders until a few years ago, but it is still a decent resort. Backside - gorgeous!
Hot Wheels Gully - better than a rollercoaster
Kirkwood Best place on South Shore. High elevation (8000 ft. base elev). The Wall (Powder conditions only!)
Chutes to the left of The Wall
Sugarbowl Closest decent resort (3 hours from SF). Half price Wednesdays ($24!) Mount Judah runs
Brighton (Utah) Cheap, all boarders, but not huge. All over
